highway=pedestrian vs. highway=path .. sidewalks vs. paved pedestrian paths
acrosscanadatrails님이 English로 2008년 10월 31일에 게시함.So in Nanaimo, i started using the highway=pedestrian tag on areas where it is designated as pedestrian... no bikes, no rolerblades, to scateboards.
... I figure that its a good idea to draw in these, where you have a cement sidewalk.. and its obvious when looking at it in real life that its not for bicycles.

When the way is paved flat (with no cement cut blocks) then its not Assumed that its only for bikes or only for foot.
Usually when it is marked as a bicycle.. then it becomes a cycleway.. and pedestrians are asked to take the 'sidewalk'. ...
And so for dirt paths where it's not clear.. i like the new JOSM feature where you can indicate it as hiking .. and it shows different hiking levels.
So to me.... IMO... i will be using highway=pedestrian in 2 cases. 1 where i show a sidewalk next to the road (other roads which dont have anything, its assumed that there is no sidewalk. .. and where its a waterfront boardwalk where its obvious that its pedestrian only.
Hopefully im on the same line of thinking.

Highway=pedestrian is for roads that have been "pedestrianised", or have been created without vehicle access.
In the UK, this has been the case in many town and city centres - where the main shopping streets have been converted so that motor vehicle traffic can no-longer use them. E.g. this example from a town that I've mapped in Cheshire, England

I certainly wouldn't tag pavements/sidewalks as highway=pedestrian.

Here in the UK at least, we wouldn't generally map pavements/sidewalks. There's fairly reliable rules as to when they'll exist (e.g. not down motorways)... The only time I would map them is when their path significantly deviates from the route of the road (e.g. perhaps round a junction where a safe route has been made)...

My little rule is to use "pedestrian" for streets that cars could use but are not allowed to and "footpath" for streets if they are too small or otherwise not passable by car. There obviously is a gray area ...

Cool, sounds like a plan.
Highway=pedestrian is only used for roads which have been converted to pedestrian zones.
And that makes sence.. It assumed that any road which is not a highspeed motorway would allow pedestrians walking on eithor side... Regardless of the surface type.
So only when the path sllightly deviates from the route of the road does it need to be marked.
Cool.
I like how the new version of JOSM has all the options for highway=path :) this makes it much easier to figure out how to make it right.
Fortunatly, i only messed it up on a few spots, so i can fix up that.
