My November 2020 in OSM
Here’s some of the things I’ve been doing in OpenStreetMap in November 2020. (Yes I know I’m posting this in late January, I’m sorry for being late. Hence some parts of this document will appear out of date)
- Mapping
- Have you heard the good news about StreetComplete?. Currently about 14% of all my edits are from SC, and rising.
- The coronavirus year of hell continues, and Europe is deep in a second wave. Germany closed all pubs & restaurants, and I’ve been working from home for weeks now. As I said on twitter StreetComplete gives me a target of going outside for a walk every day.
- I’ve been adding footpaths in various places from aerial imagery, Galway, Southampton
- Videos
- For some reason I did a lot of video stuff this month.
- After a toot on mastodon, I got a Peer Tube account on peertube.openstreetmap.fr: @rory.mccann@peertube.openstreetmap.fr
- OSM Ireland interviewed my collegue & chair of the OSMF Board, Allan Mustard. I attended and towards the end we talked a little about current OSMF issues video mirrored on PeerTube
- original video on YouTube, OSMIrl announcement tweet
- I submitted it to WeeklyOSM № 539
- I published my first screencast, how to use JOSM’s EasyPresets to create one click tag presets (also on YouTube)
- I gave another talk about imagery offsets & advanced building mapping for OSM Ireland. The video has not yet been processed & published.
- CWG
- OSM Promotional Material Programme
- Posted 2 envelopes of stickers to Germany & USA
- Posted a 600 conference pack to sticker exchange programme for rC3: Remote Chaos Experience, the replacement for the Chaos Communications Congress
- Blog posts
- There’s some new members to the CWG lately, expect more activity.
- I worked on some new blog posts which could cover mapping historical things in OSM.
- Talked to someone on the OSMF FOSS Policy Committee about the en.osm.town fediverse/mastodon instance and possible moving that to the OSMF.
- OSM Promotional Material Programme
- Community Stuff
- This is the start of an intersting twitter thread about diversity in OSM, which I took part in.
- OSMF Board
- Preperation for the AGM
- Started board votes to recommend a Yes vote for the resolutions
- Posted in several places encouraging people to run for the board
- Local Chapters
- Reviewed the amended consitution for MapUganda, looks good.
- I attended the online signing ceremony for the Local Chapters Congress where some signatures were signed
- India
- There was some query & discussion about what sort of legal body is needed here. All very preliminary.
- LCCWG
- A member asked about using Loomio for this WG and how the board could help make that happen. We’ll have to look into that.
- The Reddit OSMF Board AMA (Ask Me Anything) was very successful. 435 comments. There was a lot of interest, and we all spent a long time answering questions.
- Brexit
- The UK government gave several webinars to help organisations prepare for Brexit. I attended the ones on Data Proection & Copyright which are relevant for OSMF. Nothing terrible surprising
- I answers a handful of random emails to
board@osmfoundation.org
- We had asked the DWG about the Software Dispute Panel, and we’ll take this to next stage.
- Voted on a few applications for Active Contributor Membership.
- Further discussion on
- Preperation for the AGM

Hi Rory, interested in the Twitter thread you reference but it seems the link is broken. Could you post the correct one? Thanks!

It looks like that twitter thread is gone. Not everything on the internet lasts forever. 🙂 Sorry.
