strange node placement | I think the projection we use breaks down around 85 degrees north or south, so both poles are missing. Projections are always a compromise - we are trying to represent a globe on a flat page or screen. |

London Friends | Yeah, that makes the post not about OpenStreetMap so it is SPAM. |
|
Street Listing | Mapsomatic http://www.maposmatic.org/ will draw a map of a city and includes a street index. This is a bit more than you asked for, but it might help you and shows what can be done. |

Got harassed by Ugandan Police for OSM work | I have a few home printed cards, like business cards, with OSM info on them. I keep them with my GPS. You can hand one out to anyone who shows interest or wants to know what you're doing. |

Cycleways Defined | @Scocasso: Seriously, if you are so unhappy with the OpenCycleMap, which has won praise and awards and has taken countless hours by volunteers to create, then maybe you can do better. The OSM way is to map what you find and to tag it as you find it. Different maps then use the tags their authors find useful. There is already more than one cycle map and since your aims are different from other cycle maps (European standardisation, showing different cycle use types, and you don't like different crossing types) the best plan for you might be to render your own map. I look forward to seeing it. |

Cycleways Defined | The data is all freely available. If you want to show us all how it's done, please do. |

obtaining GPS points | If you mean the longitude and latitude of the point then you can do this with OpenLayers. OL is the Javascript that creates a slippy map, there are examples on the OpenLayers website http://www.openlayers.org/ |

Make sure that the source mentions a date | Every change in the database gets a date and time stamp, so you don't need to. |
|
open letter to the EPA | So what this shows is that you have uploaded a load of junk into our database. Why not check it FIRST then upload it. How are you going to sort this out? |

Opinion poll about the new licence Odbl 1.0 | I didn't say your opinion poll is FUD or BS, but when you encourage people to look at your poll by presenting a one-sided argument I felt some correction was required. The idea that an all-or-nothing process is going ahead in February is not true. The Foundation vote is only the first. If most or even very many contributors vote against the new licence then I doubt it will go ahead. There is always the option of last resort: forking to two projects. |

Opinion poll about the new licence Odbl 1.0 | In the interest of balance: some people would say that Ulf and others are just making trouble and spreading FUD and bullshit. |

Novam update | Using Nominatim is a neat idea, my only complaint is that it steals precious vertical space from the map div. Many laptops have widescreens, but with little height to the screen, so it would be best to maximise the height for the map, maybe make a search that can be hidden, or use a smaller font in the side bar and add it to that. |

First OpenStreetMap edits | If you are not sure, you can send a message to the person who last edited the item. To find who that was select the way in the editor and press h . This will show you the history and allow you to send an editor a message. Happy editing |

Mapping trails in the Middlesex Fells, Massachusetts, USA | If you think this scheme works well in your area you might like to document it in the wiki. |

abandoned no more | dysteleologist: What is really needed is a visibility tag or some way to say this disused or abandoned line is here and we can / can't see it. Only render it if it is visible. Some old lines have been traced from out-of-copyright maps with no regard to whether they are actually still visible on the ground. There's nothing wrong with them being in the database (they could be rendered on other maps such as a railway map) but only render what we can see today on Mapnik. Abandoned lines that become, say, cycleways just get rendered as a cycleway - that fine, they are a cycleway now. |
|
abandoned no more | I was really pleased they were *removed* from the general-purpose maps. They could be rendered on a specialist railway or historic map, but why show things that are barely discernible on the main maps? This is a backward step. |
