The unfixable state of township boundaries

Ohio, you be you!

Kidding aside, I personally believe that municipality should be excluded from administrative boundary hierachy. Map the boundary as something else. Country>state>district>sub-district(sometimes)>place(neighborhood/town/etc). At least we know the top 3 or 4 levels would never cross each other. Address and land titles follow this format anyways. IMHO of course.

Some JOSM error message are fatal if you are not careful

Thank you. will try. hopefully not all is lost. Also bug report.

Simple F9P (rtk) howto

Interesting. The price is a bit steep for a developing country, but the bigger obstacle is getting available local NTRIP stream. Anybody got any idea if positions using averaged dual band gps phones (example Mi 8 or newer) can approach the decimeter level comparable to this board?

Let's map some road names in Klang Valley, Malaysia!

Ahh… let’s get the street names from Streetview/obvious-source-not-to-named thing. Got it! /s

What goodies, the blackvue dashcam?

On Paths and Trails

how different is this from service road going around a private industrial building for example? People can map it, but essentially nobody is actually allowed to drive there (and it goes around the building so you can’t really get lost). Just random thoughts.

OSM becoming a patchwork of different referencing systems

Hah, see! it’s a never ending cycle of offsets. On another note, there is an area south of my country where the images seemed to be offset. I happened to do a survey job in that area, so I managed to get cm accuracy data and also corrected drone imagery from that survey. In addition, JOSM just added the specific carto projection for that state. Surprise, surprise! the original old Bing imagery actually lined up within 1-2 meters with the drone imagery using that coordinate projection. Makes you wonder how many more aligning mistakes were made out there.

Please Automate

The assumption for that is all the gps traces are of equivalent quality, accuracy wise. Other things that need to be considered is the already existance of surveyed points, averaged points, imageries distortions etc..

Big corporations are paying Openstreetmap mappers. Are you getting paid yet?

I’d be just as happy if I am getting paid for fixing paid mappers work.

Review of StreetComplete mobile app usage in the Ireland osm community

Perhaps there are people like me who use Streetcomplete in conjunction with Vespucci. I use Streetcomplete to scan an area for potential edits since it loads much faster that Vespucci. When I get to the targeted area, I’ll switch to vespucci to edit ( a lot more options available).

Still thankful for Streetcomplete no doubt.

External Bluetooth GPS receiver unit, Android 11 and Custom ROMs

Did the nokia used Kalman filter perhaps? That will definitely smooth out the track, but you’ll see that the radius of any sweeping left/right turn becomes a bit ‘elongated’.

In my case, raggy tracks just easily get fixed with JOSM’s shift-Y with 0.5mtr setting.

mapping rural bus routes in Ireland

If those bus routes are anything similar to developing countries, the bus stops are just basically suggestions. In those countries, to disembark, ring the bell about 200-300 meters (depending how fast the bus goes), and the driver will find a suitable place to stop. Almost similar on how to stop a bus for a ride. Wave it down somewhere! Locals do have a basic idea of the time period the bus will pass by. (I had once waited nearly 4 hours for a bus - the mistake of not calling ahead the ticket office) :)

what to do with the bookmakers under the pylons in Ghana

could very well there’s a small business beneath. pretty common in developing countries i think. although non-responsiveness of the mapper is a sign that there may be not.

An Attempt at Fixing Name Tags in the Republic of Srpska

Well, nowhere else in the world has that acute kind of a problem with naming, so I doubt it. ;)

When all effort fail, just let it be and realize that it’s out of your hands and nobody else over there honestly care that much in resolving the problem either.

An Attempt at Fixing Name Tags in the Republic of Srpska

Maybe just omit the name=* altogether. Makes everybody happy hopefully.

Entering buildings REALLY quickly in JOSM, and how to make them ready for streetcomplete housenumber tagging

usually, for multi tenant multi storey buildings, they are mapped with nodes for each. At least that what I’ve seen.

For terrace houses, I do wish that Streetcomplete can ask for a begin-end range of address (with either just odd, even or sequential) that cover end to end instead. Not everbody wants to create individual houses within the terrace building, perhaps a node for each house is sufficient enough. Example, a 20 house terrace building requires just 21 objects using nodes and rectangle outline instead of +/-80 objects.

Proper tagging for conditional restriction and which services are reading them?

Is the hgv tag necessary? Isn’t maxweight already absolute? Just wondering.

On another note, I believe that truckers of big companies usually have their own commercial gps apps that is already complete with weight and height (and even time of day) restrictions built in.

Pole Mapping

You probably could use those painter telescoping pole. Or, you could buy a galvanized 1/2 inch steel pipe that usually comes in 20ft length. :)

Accuracy and Precision in GPS Units

Even with accurate GPS location, imageries from different providers almost never match each other due to different projection/photo parameters. For example, if we have a known position (wall corner/post box/manhole etc ) that is clearly visible on Bing and Maxar. Then we both realign those imageries to the correct offset. Now, if we go to a point, lets say a building, 1km away, we will find that they do not align anymore despite both were referenced to an accurate, known position.

So, we either needs a grid like reference points or something else. Dual frequency smartphones should be of tremendous help.

My approach has always been to align everything to corrected Bing imagery. Partly because Bing is one of the earliest imagery provider in my area with a lot of OSM object mapped to it. If there’s a newer imagery from Maxar, I’ll find a feature that exist both on Maxar and Bing, and then offset Maxar to Bing.

Personally, I find it mostly to be a minor issue. Mappers using ID wouldn’t have access to the offset db in JOSM, (at least thats how it looks like) and they’ll happily trace with whatever default imagery that ID presents. You could be as precise as you want until somebody moves them again under newer imagery. It becomes a frustrating endless loop. This has been my experience in my corner of the world dealing with paid mappers.

Right around work

Just buy them by the case from costco or something. Did wonders to my bowel health (ehem) during my reckless younger years. :)
