The Nominatim QA tool added a new layer “Suspicious addr:state value”
- If addr:state is the same addr:province. Depending on country addr:province might not be needed
- If addr:state is the same as the country code
- if addr:state is the same as the country name (in any language)
https://nominatim.org/qa/#map=3.52/34.84/5.81&layer=addr_state_not_country
The layer is updated every day.
Give it a go. But not USA and Canada because I was too eager and made many edits today already.

Thanks for fixing those in Canada. I could say something about becoming the 51st state, but who needs that xxx

I could say something about interoperability, but who needs that.

The validation might need a couple of exceptions:
Algeria and Argentina don’t seem to have consensus if addr:province or addr:state should be used in address tags. Both countries’ name their subdivisions province (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_of_Algeria , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_of_Argentina).
Mexico has a state called Mexico https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_Mexico
