Visit to town council for data

Note: Govt people in India *are* willing to release data in public domain but they dont want the additional steps like uploading a document to web . They are damn lazy and love to avoid work . I dont think they have commercial mindset or planning to make some money .

Middle men are the biggest exploiters in the country :(

Visit to town council for data

@johnsmith : I was under the impression that the data would be under public domain as I first went to a Govt office from where I was redirected to a private person ( to avoid bureaucratic channels) . Till the time I reached the private person and his offer of 5000 I was not sure of license.

Even now its a private person willing to sell the govt data ! I will be approaching the Govt people through proper channels and try to convince them to release the data in public domain .

OMG this was fearful

@nmixter : best way to anonymously map is via satellite view of yahoo which for my place is of zoomlevel 9 or 10 !

Going at nights is one right way to be anonymous but the time_slot is unfortunately reserved for dogs lol

@jose_ecu

Did you mean osm.wiki/Lolcat_of_awesomeness I am not yet "that" awesome :P

Nokia Sports Tracker uses Openstreetmap

Yes . Its a nice application . I used it before the version with OSM was released . It really helps when you are taking trails while walking . You get a hint of the calories lost .. so you know when to drink some juice:D

Nepal

cool . I am mapping a small town in the neighbouring country :)

Yes we also have very less power 18 hours . In villages it fallss to 10 hours. I always take care to 'save every 5 min'

3 years of OSM - I have been warned

wow thats cool ! bicycle actually also gives you accurate GPS traces

Mapping after Hyderabad LUG meet

@zartbitter: I have a bad habit . I dont connect roads at places where I couldn't get the acurate data on the perception that unconnected roads will attract attention hence will be fixed .

As far as routing is considered . There are very very few GPS devices in India and most of them are happy using their proprietary maps . Actually very few use google maps for routing !

All the mobile phones which have GPS chip when they get released in developing world will have GPS chip missing with a slightly different model no . The reason being the mobile provider has to compete with other cheap phones .

Anyways I have connected the tracks and yeah tagged as 'track' as its most appropriate . Some times internal park authorities Jeep's roam around in the park .

I think it is made by a human :)

First complete shopping area.

what did you do when shops came too close ?

By the way Greengrocer butcher didnt get rendered in your map so on mine . If you are interested we could kind of create a big list of shops to be rendered on mapnik :)

getting dirty with mumbai

Thanks a lot for getting the AND data on railway lines . It makes my map nice :)

Zoom levels

@Gnonthgol I now understand why osmarender shows up more cluttered when there are more details .

Is Kosmos the only alternative for deploying small set of tiles ? Added to the windows tag Kosmos generated tiles will only work on IIS :( ( that makes it more untouchable :X )

Zoom levels

@amm and Johnsmith:

Google rendering is bad accepted OSM could do it better but my point is that Zoomlevel . The maximum zoom level google gives covers small area while mapnik covers more area.

When we see small area vs large area on same screen size we could more clearly observe small area fit into large screen Hence more details .

geofabrick link didnt work for me .

I am showing a google map vs OSM for this place in my town .

Google http://bit.ly/cXpgEJ
OSM http://bit.ly/9EagkI

Start from left corner a bank called SBI or state bank of India to right corner . OSM shows area till the primary road junction while google shows very less

Comparison to Google Maps

Yahoo imagery is of no use for me as for the given zoomlevel I cant even identify my small town in India . Google was the same 3 years back but 1 year back a satellite has visited and gave great imagery which lead to huge contributions to g maps . I am trying to get most of the data via GPS .

Spam in the Diary

*No data upload, no blog* LOL good one :)

What about someone who after a long time thinks to do some mapping today writes his plan ?

Debian java bug...

The problem has been there for long time in debian/ubuntu . I was suggested to use http://josm.openstreetmap.de/josm-tested.jar and run it with java . I never had problems this way . Looks like debian/ubuntu package maintainers are not that active .

where do additional tags end up ?

I mean something more than what mapnik could render
