Bloomberg once again describes the building resemble Taiwan’s Presidential Office in the military training base of Zhurihe, which is in Inner Mongolia, China. These stuffs actually are not new information, there are already discussed between military fans and even reported by the media.

There are not only one military base that have buildings or structures resemble Taiwan’ critical political and military infrastructures. The mimic of Taichung Ching Chuan Kang Airport in central Taiwan is also in the desert of inner Mongolia.

China has a long time ambition of Taiwan island due to its critical location of western pacific ocean, and see the government which self-rule the island, someone call Taiwan as a threat, which claimed some day will unite the island under China rules. It is no new news that found training infrastructure that looks like Taiwan critical infrastructures.

You could compare the outline of both buildings on OpenStreetMap (Mimic building, Taiwan Presidential Office), some mappers already map these mimic buildings or infrastructures.

One of the biggest internment camps near the region capital city Ürümqi was removed the prison tag several months ago by China mapper which claimed it is just a re-education facility for the Uyghurs , that was claimed by the China Authorities .

Now a report by Buzzfeednews findout that there are more internment camps and most of the camps are expand, which could assumed that there are more people send to these places. And some OSM mappers re-examine the previous found internment camps, and findout just west of the previous found one near Ürümq, there is a new infrastructure was built, which means no sight close down.

Some mappers who saw the news and want to map the area, wish to have a list of these camps. If someone remove camps, then we have a list and can re-add the camp back on map.

Some Chinese mappers are defending their government claims of these facility are re-education center for Uyghurs. But for OSM mappers, if a removed happened, it should have strong evidence to support their claims and then remove these named facility. If no these facility should keep what is tagged. And I have to say sorry keep commenting on one of a Chinese mappers changeset, hope the alert mail won’t make him in trouble.

I hope they could record something on Mapillary, we could see the image of re-education facility as real educational institute, and see some happy Uyghurs learning useful stuff for life, earning their livings after they finished their training program.

In the metropolitan area of Hsinzhu, around the administrative border of Taoyuan, Hsinzhu, once there is a empty place on OpenStreetMap, not well-mapped area. When you open the only available satellite image Bing image of the time, you will tell why it is impossible to map anything, there is only low-res image in the area availabe on Bing Image. The only thing mappers can do is drawing Provincial Highway, Freeway, traditonal railway or high speed railway. And of course mappers could not map the common pond used for irrigation, and could just sigh and compliant about the situation, nothing could do.

Several years later there are DigitalGlobe and Mapbox satellite, which could be use for tracing by mappers. And finally Bing enhanced there image quality, there is no more wide range of low-res image. We the mappers could easily trace the road and residental area.

Taiwan Governement release open data, the official map which is maintained by National Land Survay Center also distribute zome level 15 map verison, could be accessed by WMS. OpenStreetMap mappers could make sure if a road exist, and even draw small alley in the residental area. Coach Mappers could just trace NLSC Open Data map with no pian on OpenStreeteMap.

In the recent years, OSM data in Taiwan is greatly enhanced, even small adminstrative level like villages was mapped. Data users could easily extract data. There are places that have more active mappers, the stores and local amenities are well mapped. The wide blank of Taoyuan and Hsinzhu is no more a problem, just a pasted history. There are more people contribute data on OpenStreetMap in Taiwan, and have wide range of interests, and map varies things. We hope OpenStreetMap community could encourage more contribution to the map.

I want to say something from my own perspective for Drinking Water Map, and option is my own, not a community members consensus. If other community members have thoughts it is only properly for them to speak for themselves.

Drinking Water Map is a organization to organization corporate-project, it is not wise to ban some certain people, and also not a mature things to do. But if we count the actions of e-info, I thought they will have a consistent action plan, at least interacting with outside will have a consistent action plan. But it was not the case, community member of OpenStreetMap had to reply to questions that already was answered, no one had read the written notes. I am very disappointed about e-info, being a environmental organization for 10 years, someone had to reply to already answered questions, had to explained to already told future vision.

I heard someone talking about Drinking Water Map again. I want to make it clear as a Community member of OpenStreetMap, OpenStreetMap project welcome everyboday use its date, in the condition of obeying OpenStreetMap’s specification and license, following the OBdb license of database, the tile image is by CC-By-SA 2.0.

With someone not familar with Taiwan Open Source community, they not very well know about the definition of corporation. OpenStreetMap Taiwan Community is not legalized by Taiwan Government, not technically as NGO. I have to say again that E-infor mention about OpenStreetMap when talking about Drinking Water Map, is just an attempt to do something, does not endorses for e-info interior working goal. What they claim is not acknowledged or recognized by OpenStreetMap Taiwan Community.

OpenStreetMap Taiwan Community is very serious about the data quality of OpenStreetMap in Taiwan, and working solo by importing open government data of drinking water infrastructure, without the help from e-info. The problem raised by Community regard the map appearance issue, such as no information should be putted in name field, and the issue on GitHub Reposit, was ignored by e-for. Much of the time serious issue was not deal, instead was just some grin response for entertainment.

There are several problem between e-info and OpenStreetMap Taiwan. If you are interested you can read the post published in June.

The secret behind the tagging of multilingual name

Posted by Supaplex on 30 January 2020 in English. Last updated on 31 January 2020.

I want to talk about the things of tagging of OpenStreetMap multilingual name that was not convenience to mention about when I give a talk.

The first thumb of rules is do not mechanical edit place where there is a active community, place like Europa. Your edit might got rolled back if in serious condition due to the nature of mass modification, some one report that some problem occur. I use the CC0 license Wikidata item that does not include coordinate data, just the sitelink of different language version of Wikipedia. Sometimes the Wikipedia article name and the name previous added on OpenStreetMap is quite different, if you just replace with the Wikidata data, you are in trouble when European community found out.

Compare to Europe, editing in China or the US does not encountering much obstacle. The former one community is much small, there are so much place and administrative relation has not been edit of multilingual, even has the form of Chinese name plus English name in parentheses of name field, which usually stands for local name. The latter one is due to the fact American are mostly monolingual people, not doing so much on add multilingual. If you want to go to a trip to the US, you might spending time to add the language you familiar. So it is a easy task to using Wikidata multilingual data as a source, adding it on OpenStreetMap in the US and China.

I went to Taichung for COSCUP Taigi Conference last Saturday. But I didn’t response some question very well, so I type for a better answers for the question attendee asked.

For the question regard of how many place hasn’t tag with name:nan which stand for Taiwanese, the number is 15,000. The name:hak which stand for Hakka language is much more, but the magnitude is quite the same level, around 15,000 place name that has no name:hak tag.

Some one ask about the API, one of the API OverPass API is quite useful for small amount data, and can use OverPass API with certain query script, finding out which place still lack Taiwanese name tag name:nan. Using the same query script, just replace name:nan with name:hak, and you can find out the place which lack Hakka language name for a place.

Link for the query:OverPass Turbo

Someone says Department of Geography of NTNU had already publish a place name dictionary 《台灣地名辭典》, which has local language name like Taiwanese and Hakka place name. It will be a good reference book for researching place name.

Currently OpenStreetMap place name is based on GNS database from the US military, and plus some place from 台灣堡圖. I feel good to know that some years ago there is a book publish by Department of Geography, NTNU, but due to copyright issue, we just can’t import all the name from the book to OpenStreetMap.

Correction of the OCF address

Open Culture Foundation (OCF) had move away from Bade Road Section 1, around Guanghua Market. But the map website had not update the venue. Despite OpenStreetMap, even Google Maps does not update the venue.

I edit OpenStreetMap today, fixing OCF address on OpenStreetMap, adding the new office of OCF on Bade Road Section 4. I also summit a edit suggestion on Google Maps, hoping Google will accept my change as soon as possible.

It is quite strange for me that Facebook fanpage for OCF address is already update, on the street of Bade Road Section 4.

Taiwan Provincial Highway 12 relation

Posted by Supaplex on 28 December 2019 in English.

Taiwan Provincial Highway 12 in Taichung, is the famous Taiwan Boulevard, which linked Taichung City Downtown and Taichung Harbour. I edit and creat Provincial Highway 12 relation today. And I hope I can create route relation for each Provincial Highway route that doesn’t exist on OpenStreetMap in the future.

There are Provincial Highway 6, Provincial Highway 13, Provincial Highway 13A, Provincial Highway 61B, Provincial Highway 63, Provincial Highway 31, Provincial Highway 37, still don’t have route relation for each highway route. When I finish all Provincial Highway routes, I hope I can start working on City/County Highway and Country/District Highway.
