I started to add in the main streets.. its a small town, so in the course of my activities tomorrow, ill be walking all around, so it'll be easy to track it.

I'm just walking on one side of the road, then the other side on the way back, so its easy to see where the roads are.

What i'm doing is jumping around from other cities that i know of, and compare on how to properly tag, or to see whats the standard.
There are tonnes of things to be tagging here.

I uploaded some more of my tracks from ireland, not now, but later i will go in there and see if anyone else has been working in the areas i covered.
.. but for now the track are there so it should help.

I figured id write it in here, in case anyone can chime in.

I am working on the outline map, and using xapi to grab the large amount of data. .. as an OSM file, these files are big, however, when i convert them to IMG files. .there smaller. Considerably smaller, in that its possible to have all OSM data for Canada in a complete Canada mapset.
What im doing is creating a set defines tile area, in which the boundaries don't get messed up with too much overlap of data. .. trying to make it so that full city areas are all in the same tile region, and so its only a few road segments which might get duplicated.

Cloudemade: I see that it hasn't yet been organized, as a few downloads for IMG tiles. .. thats probably because of the sheer scale of it.
So when small isolated towns in the north (for example) yet OSM'd then it takes a whole lot of power to get all that data and converted again.

What would be wild is this:

Using Marble Desktop, to be able to grad the area your looking at, and save it as an OSM file. .. or better yet. with a extra couple mouse clicks, to have it automatically run mkgmap program in DOS, as the file just needs to be saved as data.osm, and it automatically gets saved as the same #'d tile. .. so ....
What would be cool would be to have a program where it automatically asks me to save that .img file SaveAs then i would change the name.

Is there an international standard for tile numbering? .. for GeoBase it seems pretty good, as I'm using 72 as the prefix as it corresponds to 'G' 'B' and then 2 3 digit tile areas. .. if the planet is divided into squares from the equator to the poles. .. cant we have a '1' for possitive and a '0' for negative ..
so then when describing the tile, its 10490123 .. meaning positive 049N and negative 123W .... so then we can have 1 degree tiles available all over the planet. with 1 mouse click to grab the osm data and convert it to IMG.

Its so awesome how its so easy to collaborate with others with making this map project happen.

What i found best is that my keeping in touch with those who are fellow mappers in the area and also with those who are mapping country wide, this avoids so much extra work.

Im getting ever so closer to getting the map ready to launch.

Ive added some more tracks and highway=path to Mount Doug. .. so now its looking much better. Still not done yet, as there is more to map. .. this is fun :)

Anyway, question for anyone reading.

According to signs in the park, NO bikes are aloud on any of the trails. .. yet in a couple cases, the trail is wide enough for a bike.
Some sections that are easy are hard-packed gravel.. and some are dirt trails. and some (towards the top) are more challenging 'actual hiking' trails. .. as you kinda need to be fit, to climb it. .. or it would just take some time, as a couple sections involve a little rock climbing.

I know that for trail sections that are concrete slabs.. its man-made. .. and actual steps are involved. .. other parts are natural rocks, which are like steps.

So i think the rule for this is to tag it like this

highway=steps (for the man-made steps)
highway=footway (for the man-made concrete sidewalk)
highway=path (for the general trail which includes gravel and dirt and steep trails.

highway=track
tracktype=grade2

... ideas?

Still a bit frustrated with the GeoBase Data.... so now i created a Canada WikiMAP tiles chart, hopefully this will relieve some frustration :)

comments anyone? As it's a fine-line, but can't technically (yet) be used... although its free. .. (i think others are now becoming frustrated with me, as i continue to wonder about this) ... I'm probably more concerned than others.. as my goal is to create the routes across Canada. .. Id like to be able to be physically in each town, and be more verifying each bit of data, or confirming the roads.. rather than creating the roads from scratch... so i can go forward and place in markers for the important points of interest.
Do i have a valid point? or am i just being lazy? ... honestly.

I just ched and those tracks were updated.. nice.
Last summer i was in Medicine Hat Albera, and i just checked the map and see its not that well maped yet. .. alot of my tracks were on the trans canada trail.. as its in that city. and there is a pavilion there too. ..
Thats the city with the big giant T-Pee. .. hopefully these tracks will help someone when they are traveling that area. .. I'll draw some lines on it for where i remember trail bits to be.

I posted more tracks most of it was along the highway 3... you can see spots where i turned off and such.

Hopefully i remember it all when i get down to drawing lines for it :)

I have now uploaded the tracks from Greenwood to Castlegar, hopefully the all will show up.

i thing highway=path is appropriate as its a multi-use path
then each section would receive a grade level.

Both the Eholt summit and the the summit going to Castlar are absolutely incredible. .. however, an expedition touring bike (a trekking bike) is recommended for sure. ... a part of the Rockies that gets missed when taking the Trans Canada Highway. or the Crossnest. .. there are a few access points.. ill see if i can find those. .. but im sure someone else will come along and post it.

Rock Creek, BC is in there too. Thats where the Gold Rush way real big, back in the 1800's. .. Many towns along the KVR railway (which is now the Trans Canada Trail) have gone 'extinct' and all the remains is a water tower.
So when you see names of towns on an old map. Some of them dont exist. .. or its on 1 farmers field.

There are many spots where you can still see the Octagon shape of the Water towers, but i cant tell where exactly those were.. as the GPS tracks could have been from me stopping anywhere :)

.. hey, what were doing here is like setting railway tracks across the planet, like they did back in the early 1800's in explorations. ... but now 200 years later, were working on this truely international collaboration project... and we all get to see the Blue Prints as the Architect, engineer, City Planner etc. has them on the table.

I posted these few tracks. . I noticed that gort isnt that well covered, nore is the route i took to avoid the busier road. .. And princeton, BC itsnt that well covered. Thanks to the posters who replied to my lasty comment. I'll somewhere along the line, go alread and draw lines highway=road where i think i remember that a road should be there.

Im using Kosmos. .. it's super Awesome! thanks for creating that.. and as its open source thanks to all who is contributing. ..
I noticed that all the roads which aare tagged 'highway=road' and nothing else, dont get shown up using Kosmos. .. as Kosmos then is even more super awsome, as its the place you can go to, so to print of nice tourist maps, or other maps for any reason, and make it look cool. ...

I dont plan on using it for any street editing, (i dont think its made for that) thats why we use JOSM or PotLatch.. so it can be done in real-time.

(ps. the map is for Gort area.. as i already pointed to princeton area before.

So i have loaded 5. ... but i think thats too many tracks. .. probably best to keep it at 3 and then a few hours later load another 3, as they get loaded. ..

I have created a folder on my computer which says which tracks have already been uploaded, as i am loading on tracks which were done 1 year ago.

If i was to look at a paper map, then i can see what the road names are. .. however, its probably best to just have it simple and marked as surface type, as thats what i remember for sure. I also remember where the turns were and how the roads went. .. This way someone can come along later and mark them, as a better base is built.
Fortunatly the major highways have all all been covered, so it now on to refining them.

if anyone is looking at that.. im still working on it..

I'm now uploading more GPS tracks..
Unfortunately as i lost the GPS device when i was in white rock, i lost all the tracks from Vancouver island. .. so its from north Vancouver and down to white rock and to Abbotsford.
Then to Cultus lake... then to Sasquatch pp, as i didn't do the Trans Canada trail from there.. as i heard it was a super big climb and would take a while. ... so i took the side road into hope.

.. I remember alot of the details so i should be able to add in some points and trails, from whats not done already.

... Im hoping that more users will be adding to this site, as there are a few other GPS track sharing sites.. but this is the one that should be used as it would be wild if it could show vertical profiles and have a front end even more user friendly :) ... in time. .. and hey, it's wiki. .. so i cant complain. .. if i don't like it.. i can take initiative and find a solution. .. which i am working on :)

Im now editing and mapping out more of Mount Doug park in Victoria, BC
.. I saw note on the user diries about there being a rule of only a max number of 16 relations aloud for a bus route. .. i dont think that applies to what im doing. However, it might. .. i think the answer was to have the point list all the bus stops and the point which is part of the route show the list with a comma after each bus.

ive added the walking route, but see that some of the route is already posted, so i need to fix that some how...

I just uploaded now 2 days of when i was cycling around Ireland. the last one was the 1st day when i got my bike back together from off the plane from Toronto, canada. The previous file is taking the train to Port Rush, and around port rush.

I still have the OSI map book, so i can tag stuff which isnt already tagged. .. hopefully it will be accurate enough for someone else to come along and refine it and add in the connecting streets.

I just posted my tracks of doing this walk, i see that someone else has started it, so thats great.
This walkway, in some sections is rather wide, so i think its best just to estimate until there is other points for reference.
..
I also uploaded the Mount Douglas gpx file, as i walk upto the top. I lost satalite reception on the way up and down, so again i think its some estimating there...
This time i wont erase my underlay tracks.

I think iĺl make the tracks public though, as that would help other people..

Im thinking that especially for the wikiproject canada, that a clearer discription on how things should be posted. .. like a full directory, that would help.
