Waterloo Ring Road Sheared. Is this a glitch?

Don't know what to tell you. It couldn't have been some new user accidentally dragging it; that probably would have been fixed by now.

Speed limits

In the city I live in, Seattle, WA, all streets have a speed limit of at least 25 mph. If this is true in your town, you could probably tag all residential streets with a certain speed. This is pretty tedious, though, and you can't count on every street having the same speed limit. The only good way to find out the speed limits is to drive around town making note of speed limits on certain roads.

Mappers in Fernie, BC, Canada?

@!i!
I don't think this map will really help him because there don't seem to be a lot of user groups listed on here. There's only two for Britain (gasp). The closest one to BC shown on this map is in Seattle, WA.

Site I love

there should be some way to mark user diaries as spam. I've seen a lot lately.

Villages in South Wales

@terrencem:
To find the FAQ page, click "Documentation" on the left - that will bring up the OSM wiki page. Once on that page, click "FAQs." By the way the wiki page is very useful when you are unsure of what tag to be used for something in OSM. It has helped me a lot; I'm sure it'll help you, too.

Remember, NEVER copy off of any other map while editing osm. I know it's tempting but just don't do it.

Interesting GPS trace, and other MapDust oddities

I hate it when people post bug reports that make no sense! It really degrades the usefulness of MapDust. Mapdust would be way more useful if people actually took time to explain in depth what the problem is.

Skobbler

Mapdust is really nice when people use it right. But sometimes people's descriptions make absolutely no sense, and I mark them as invalid. But I must say that it's helped me correct quite a few errors in OSM data.

How to draw correctly sized round circles in Potlatch 2.

Yes, I've noticed that it's being kinda strange. The circle tool in Potlatch 1.4 works just fine, so I just use that whenever I want to draw a roundabout/ circle.

Anyway, that's a great technical description.

Someone has vandalized OSM

It looks fine now. Someone must have fixed it. Probably someone mistakenly dragged a way in Potlatch 2. That way-dragging feature is SOOO annoying, i wish they would get rid of it!

Road Classifications

@Stormspace9
you don't have to follow my descriptions exactly. Just go off of how much use a road gets.

Road Classifications

Well, we always try to do this. But there's always a bunch of other issues we have to take care of as well. The reason they're all residential (well at least in the US) is because there was a TIGER import several years ago that added all the roads for the US. There's lots of inaccuracies in the data though:
a. All the roads were uploaded as residential, even though most shouldn't be marked as this type. Just use your judgement to decide whether they should be marked as a tertiary road (any 2-lane arterial with a yellow line down the middle), a secondary road (generally 4 lanes, but could also be a heavily used 2-lane road- ie state highway), a primary road (a major arterial or state/US highway), or a trunk road (a divided highway w/ at-grade intersections).

b. Another problem with the TIGER data is that it is poorly aligned to satellite imagery, thus inducing errors in routing. The act of fixing this data (aka TIGER Fixup) takes up most of our edits on OSM. See link below for more info on TIGER fixup.

The nice thing about the data is that it provides a baseline for roads in the US and saves us a lot of time going out and surveying the roads and finding out their names.

US power lines are still incomplete

Boy, I didn't think it was that bad. There is a user in Washington State who has done quite a bit of mapping powerlines, zephyr. He is the reason it looks so darn good. I should get him to take a look at this.

Signs, maximum speeds, village limits

You have to put the maxspeed=* tag on a particular way to set the speed limit of the road. When the road's speed limit changes, then split the way at the point where it changes and tag the appropriate speed limits for those two ways. You're not supposed to tag it as a node because then it doesn't get attributed to a particular road.

SHELL GAS

oh and also check out the potlatch 2 primer. It has info on how to use potlatch 2. osm.wiki/Potlatch2/Primer

SHELL GAS

I assume you live in the Puget sound area. Guess what, I live here too and it's great to see new users contributing to the map to make it awesome. Go ahead and add that gas station; it's not that hard. Potlatch 2 is VERY easy to for new users to get the hang of. Once you get the hang of OSM, you will find that you can add waaaaay more detail to the map than, say, google maps. Just see this example here (osm.org/?lat=47.62816&lon=-122.13482&zoom=16&layers=M). That's how all of OSM should look like in seattle.

Anyway, also read the beginners guide on the wiki (see link below) for more info.

Beginners guide: osm.wiki/Beginners%27_guide

Bing

In Seattle, Washington and the surrounding area, I have found that it is almost always newer than the Yahoo imagery.

How do I make buildings, parking lots, etc.?

start out with potlatch 2 and once you get the hang of how OSM works, you could switch to a more complex editor like JOSM or Merkaartor. Or you could just stick with potlatch.

How do I make buildings, parking lots, etc.?

you should take a look at the wiki (click the documentation link at the left). The OSM wiki has great info about pretty much every tag in OSM. If you're new to OSM, you should click on "Beginners guide" and read what it tells you.

API

Wow, i'm surprised you'd be wanting to write an OSM editor for your first iPhone app. THat sounds complicated, mainly because there's a lot of features in OSM. Maybe just start with something simple and gradually add more and more features.

Question about importing Waterways from Canada's Geogratis data

Yes, giggls is right. I think it would be best to contact a user in your area who has done a bulk import like yours.
