JOSM simplify way hint

I think the plugin has changed.

I downloaded the latest josm last week and I had to adjust the value to be much smaller, I think I'm using 2.5 now.

Another section of the Great North Walk done.

Yes I've heard that there is some other good mtbing around newcastle.

Find the HMBA association website and awaba looks like it will be fun, but can't find anymore info about killingworth.

Not planning to be up there anytime soon, so you've got plenty of time to map them for me ;)

Power lines are addictive

I agree if that is what you enjoy, then go and do it.

For me what I like doing is going walking and mountain biking in remote locations, mainly because this information isn't readily available from other sources.

And as you say you also get to map roads in remote areas to get you to and from the location.

Excellent work, amazing how good newcastle looks compared when I did the little bit of it while up there.

Looking forward to using the gps and your tracks to find some new mtbing in glenrock next time I'm up there.

mapping Euro Route R1 in Poland

I've used surface=unpaved for similar sorts of tracks.

Note you can have highway=primary and surface=unpaved if required. There are some major roads in central Australia which are dirt roads, but still reasonably busy with tourist traffic. So the highway and surface tags are orthogonal.

Just started mapping with GPS

You can find garmin routable maps here

http://emexes.powweb.com/osm/download.html

Not sure how good they are for cycling because they will prefer to send you via freeways and so on.

What is really needed is to regenerate the garmin maps marking bike routes as freeways, so that the routing engine then prefers to send you along bike friendly routes.

Great Bikes of Fire

Great first photo, see what you mean about the second being anti-climatic!

First update on mapping OpenStreetMap (long overdue)

You've done a great job Blue.

I did notice when you first started. I went down and traced some roads with my GPS at the end of Arden St, and when I got home and went to add them to the map, I saw that you had already done them.

Also would love to know how you generated the graphic, very interesting!

It was that that inspired me to learn how to use josm with the yahoo imagery.

Woodlands Historic park, Melbourne, Australia

Actually I see the problem, I confused the park name. I was at Woodlanks Historical Park, not at Westerfolds, which now that I remember is on the Yarra River. Hence me not seeing any of your changes.

Anyway diary entry corrected.

Glad to see that I've inspired someone to start mapping the park, however I can't see the results in OSM, have you uploaded them yet?

A good chunk of Newcastle is now traced

Great job.

It's the mtb and bike trails which I was interested in. So will be watching your work with interest, so the next time I'm up in Newcastle I can discover some new tracks.

Moving back to Newcastle

I was up visiting my mum, and I wanted to have a map of the area so I didn't get lost, so I mapped the bits that I needed, and then uploaded them to my gps.

I marked all the tracks cycleway as I was using them as mtb tracks. So to me they were cycleways. I do wish the unpaved and paved tracks rendered differently because as you say there is a big difference between the fernleigh track and the paths in Glenrock.

Moving back to Newcastle

I did the tracks in Glenrock. It would be great if you could get a better fix for those tracks. I did them using a Garmin Etrex Legend, and the fix wasn't great a lot of the time. I also did the rest of the roads around the area, just using the yahoo imagery, also I used the imagery for getting the road down to the lagoon, so it might not be in the right place.
