We do use piwik, rather than google, and as far as I can see the version of iD installed on the main site is not attempting to load google analytics. Can you tell me what makes you think it is?

I setup the mediawiki instance we use for wiki.osm.org… We originally used an alternative to ReCaptcha but I was asked to switch as it wasn’t compatible with screen-readers. I’d gladly switch to something else.

All this paranoia over recaptcha is unwarranted in my opinion. Get a grip.

@TomH Perhaps I’m looking at the wrong site then http://openstreetmap.us/iD/release/index.html ?

@robert You might want to read this article and ponder the role census data played in it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_American_internment

@K01umbus and they also used maps to plan transportation for both the Japanese Internment. Hitler also used extremely detailed ones to transport people to the concentration camps…

With that argument you would basically have to halt science because just about everything that science creates can be used for good or evil. Look at atomic energy, bacterial research, and the list goes on.

I don’t know what is up with all this fuss about captchas these days but it seems to be getting more and more ridiculous. I can understand changing it if there is a technical reason (Or hugely better method) to do so but otherwise don’t fix things that aren’t broken.

That’s my two cents.

Piwik’s great, although another great option that always seems to get overlooked is Open Web Analytics. Personally for me, I don’t like the thought of any one company tracking me, my friends, my family everywhere they go and keeping permanent records of everything that they said to each other and everyone else. That just seems like a horrific abuse of power just waiting to happen. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But sooner or later almost inevitably.

Oh, and I’m not against scientific advancement. As was said already, all technology can be used for good or evil, but some technologies lend themselves more easily to either good or evil. Near universal tracking of people’s location, conversation and affiliations seems to lend itself quite neatly in the latter camp.

just +1 @K01umbus since here are also opposite opinions. We should not enable google to track everybody of us. That is more important if even opting out of google’s services is not possible at the wiki signup. No contribution possible without feeding google - bah. Similar problems arise for the log-in here (but not using is possible here)… a nice advertisement for those big tracking companies.

I think you’re all overestimating Google’s competence, especially in “tracking all of us”.

@K01umbus I think your Japanese internment argument is absurd.

I agree that there users should not be forced to use google recapcha. In addition to what has been said, it helps google with digitalizing the books and there might be people who do not want to help google in this - the project has many contraversories, including data licencing and unhappy authors of books beeing digitalized. Therefore users of project like openstreetmap with very different philosophy should not force its users to contribute to google digitalization.

@K01umbus: Yes, google analytics code is (among other stuff) in https://github.com/systemed/iD/blob/master/dist/index.html (starts at line 26) and also attempted to load on http://www.openstreetmap.us/iD/master and http://openstreetmap.us/iD/release/index.html (judging from AdBlock’s object list) - development/test versions/site. However, it is apparently not attempted to load on osm.org/edit?editor=id (our main site).

Right, thanks for the thorough explanation aseerel4c26. Good to hear it’s not on the main site.
