Changeset When Comment
173897 almost 2 years ago

Welcome aboard woodpeck!

Your additions help making the map more accurate and useful for everyone. There are two practices that can significantly enhance the quality of your contributions: providing clear changeset comments and maintaining a concise bounding box (bbox) for your changesets.

Changeset comments are crucial because they provide context to your edits. They allow other mappers to understand your rationale, the sources of your information, and the nature of the changes you’ve made. This is particularly beneficial in case of disputes or if clarification is needed. It's about clearly communicating the intent of your contributions, which is essential in a collaborative project like OpenStreetMap.

Keeping a tight bbox for your changesets is equally important. A bbox that closely encapsulates the area of your actual edits makes it easier for others to review your work and to understand the geographical scope of your changes. It reduces confusion and helps in maintaining a well-organised and manageable database. Here, your small changes cover a rectangle going from Karlsruhe to almost Strasbourg.

Happy mapping, and welcome once more!

I see three questions here.

1. Are there cliffs?

Yes. The area is known for its cliffs which sometimes roll down to the houses.

https://lequotidien.lu/tag/tawioun/

https://www.virgule.lu/luxembourg/eboulements-a-luxembourg-certains-quartiers-plus-menaces-que-d-autres/135717.html

I have no idea whether the black lines shown on the lidar are really cliffs, or how big they are individually, but they certainly look like cliffs, and there certainly are cliffs there.

2. What are the standards to map a cliff?

That's the kind of thing where the admins say that people should talk: what constitutes a cliff, a way? What are the minimal standards we have consensus on to map them? There has been no good faith attempt at discussing them. https://community.openstreetmap.org/tag/luxembourg is barren, and the Luxembourg chat is very very quiet these days.

3. Is this kind of changeset comment good?

No. It makes the recipient feel attacked. It makes no attempt at being constructive or at building consensus. It's part of the problem, not the solution, and reflects badly on the commenter. The fact that the recipient has left comments in a similar tone in the past doesn't justify the tone. This kind of discussion culture is toxic for a community.

I urge all participants to read up on non-violent communication, and to be disciplined in keeping their comments constructive.

In the age of chatgpt, it is trivial to get over your anger and have a robot redraft your messages in a way that doesn't make the other feel attacked: https://chat.openai.com/share/2dc1c774-1808-4cb2-9b48-edd53a9fa3a6

Hi Rossch,

Do you maybe remember where you found the address of "22 Schullstrooss" for the FC Berdenia Berbourg stadium clubhouse? I can't find a trace of this address anywhere else.

Happy mapping,

Guillaume

Actually, looking at osm.wiki/Key:crossing:markings, it looks like that tag is for the lines itself, not the background colour.

Здравейте Dimitar! Yes, that tag didn't exist yet back then. It's probably ripe for a mechanical edit in Luxembourg.

Hi Tom,

As I was writing in osm.org/changeset/119803171:

> The street sign at the intersection says Haardterwee in one word. The cadastre, unhelpfully, has Haardterwee in its address database and Haardter Wee on its maps. Linguistically, I think two words is correct.

I'm afraid that luxpostcodebase is neither a reliable source nor one we're allowed to copy from.

Also note that the road has four segments, and that you've only renamed one.

I have changed the name back to "Haardterwee" since that's the name on the sign, and left the alt_name to "Haardter Wee" since that seems to be in use too.

In general, I think the Luxembourg community does a pretty good job at keeping OSM in sync with what's in the official open data databases and what's on the ground. You can join our chat (https://matrix.to/#/#osmlu:matrix.org) if you'd like to discuss street names with the local community.

Happy mapping!

Hi Deoniss! Congratulations on your first edit. I have now removed 9,11,13 rue Kahlenbeerch. They appear in the official data, but you're saying they don't exist at all on the ground?

Hi! The street sign at the intersection says Haardterwee in one word. The cadastre, unhelpfully, has Haardterwee in its address database and Haardter Wee on its maps. Linguistically, I think two words is correct.

Would you be ok with "Haardter Wee" as an alt_name?

Hello ViTiS57!

Hi 3qH4! Be careful, you dropped some street names here.
